Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors are formed by altering the refractive index of the fibre core to produce a small periodic modulation. When a laser source is injected in to the fibre containing the grating, the wavelength corresponding to the grating pitch will be reflected while all other wavelengths will pass through the grating undisturbed. When there are temperature or stress changes, there will be a change in grating period. As the grating period is strain and temperature dependent, it becomes possible to measure these two parameters by analyzing the intensity of the reflected light as a function of the wavelength.
